10 Halloween Costumes for Small Dogs

On Halloween, dressing your puppy up in a hamburger costume is a fun idea. Below are our favorite funny costumes for small dogs this year, sorted by theme, with the fabric and the sizes in stock for each one.

Before you shop, read the safety notes further down. A costume only works if your dog can see, move and breathe normally in it.

Funny costumes also work well on dogs that already wear clothes. If your dog has never worn a sweater or a shirt, start with something simple a few weeks before Halloween and save the costume for the night itself. A dog that is used to having fabric on its back will usually settle into a costume; a dog than a dog that is meeting clothes for the first time.

How We Picked

We left out styles that need straps around the face. We also looked at how each costume goes on, what it is made of and which sizes were in stock when we checked, so you can compare them in the table below. You can browse the full Halloween costume collection for more.

Food Costumes

Food costumes get the laughs at parties and on doorsteps. Both picks below are pullovers, so there is nothing to tie or button.

Keep the Costume Safe

The AKC says "A safe costume should never interfere with your dog's ability to see, hear, breathe, walk, or rest comfortably."

The ASPCA adds that a costume should not limit a dog’s movement, sight or ability to breathe or bark, and suggests having your dog try on the costume before the big night.

For many dogs, a full costume is too much. The AKC suggests a single holiday-themed accessory instead, and notes that a bandana still needs supervision because it can catch on objects. Take your photos early, and do not leave your dog alone while dressed up. Our Halloween costume safety checklist covers trick-or-treating in more detail.

Do a Test Run at Home

Put the costume on your dog a few days before Halloween, in a quiet room. Watch your dog walk, sit, lie down and turn around. Check the armholes and the neck opening for rubbing, and look for loose threads or decorations your dog could chew. If your dog freezes, paws at the costume or keeps trying to back out of it, take it off and try again later with treats and a short session.

Repeat the test run once more on a different day. A costume that was fine for two minutes may feel different after ten, and you will learn how long your dog is really happy to wear it.

Get the Size Right

Measure your dog’s chest girth, the widest part of the chest, and back length, then compare them with the chart for that style. Fitwarm’s size guide says to size up if your dog is between sizes, and notes that dogs with extra fluff can sometimes require a size up.

Order Early

Fitwarm ships orders within 2 business days, and standard US shipping takes 6 to 10 business days, so the whole window from order to doorstep runs about two to three weeks.

Whichever costume you choose, try it on at home a few days before Halloween. Shop the full Halloween costume collection and pick the one that suits your dog.
